Marketing and Communication News

The city of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County are sponsoring Gang Awareness Week Jan. 25 - 30 to raise awareness of youth street gangs and educate residents about gang activities and recruiting methods.

Gang Awareness Week is intended to shine a light on the negative aspects of youth gangs, and to encourage local residents, agencies, counselors, and social workers to become more aware of youth street gangs and their activities.

Activities during the week will be held in Winston-Salem, Clemmons, and Kernersville and will include lectures on gangs and how they operate, panel discussions, and workshops for law enforcement, counselors, and human services workers. Most events are open to the public.

Many topics will be presented at multiple locations and on different days, said Solomon Quick, the gang coordinator specialist for the Winston-Salem Police Department. "We want to give as many people as possible the opportunity to learn about gangs," Solomon said. "If someone can’t attend at a particular location or a particular time, hopefully, they will have another option."

Local officials will hold a news conference at 12:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 25, to discuss Gang Awareness Week. The news conference will be held at the Goler Family Enrichment Center, 620 Patterson Ave. Watch the news conference [video/24min]
