Mayor Allen Joines and the City Council will pass a resolution Monday honoring Tom Walter, the head coach of the Wake Forest baseball team, for "bringing the great need for organ donation to the forefront of public awareness in our community and nationally."

Last month, Walter donated a kidney to Kevin Jordan, one of the freshmen baseball players whom Walter had recruited. After committing to Wake Forest, Jordan was diagnosed with ANCA vasculitis, a rare kidney disorder resulting from autoimmune swelling. Before the transplant, Jordan had only 8 percent of his kidney function and he was undergoing dialysis three times a week.

None of Jordan's family members were suitable donors for a kidney transplant. Walter volunteered to be tested and was found to be a strong match. The transplant was performed on Feb. 7. The story was carried by such national news organizations as the New York Times, ESPN, Sports Illustrated and USA Today.

The resolution will be presented at the City Council Meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, March 28, in the City Hall Council Chamber.
