City officials will unveil a plaque Tuesday, Jan. 21 commemorating the vote in 1985 by the Board of Aldermen to honor the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as a city holiday. The program will be held at 6 p.m. outside the entrance to the Council Chamber on the second floor of City Hall, 101 N. Main St.

All former members of the City Council and Board of Aldermen have been invited to join the current council members at the unveiling.

The board voted unanimously on Dec. 16, 1985, to make King’s birthday the 10th city holiday. The holiday was first observed in Winston-Salem on January 20, 1986, to coincide with the first observance of the federal King Day holiday.

The unveiling is one of at least 14 events being held in conjunction with the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Other events are listed on the calendar below. For more information about these events, visit the Human Relations web page at or call CityLink 311.
