StoryLine VanThe Forsyth County Historic Resources Commission’s Education Committee has partnered with Storyline/ECHO Network and Creative Corridors Coalition (CCC) to continue collecting oral history from the City of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County residents to deepen our understanding of our history and heritage.

StoryLine is a project of the ECHO Network, an organization dedicated to fostering trusting relationships and connections (social capital) among diverse people in the greater Winston-Salem area. ECHO’s StoryLine Project was founded on a simple, yet powerful, premise: When we share our stories, and listen openly to the stories of others, we expand our understanding of who we are as a community. We discover what we share in common and begin to understand and appreciate the diverse experiences that shape our lives and community.

The collaboration with CCC was to assist them in collecting valuable oral histories that may assist in the future with artful designs for road corridors. The use of such stories could inspire designs, possibly in the visual art form or in historic graphic panels celebrating the people and events of a specific area, such as the Martin Luther King Jr. corridor.

The HRC and CCC hope to continue working with the ECHO Network to bring together various groups and neighborhoods of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County. The partnership also allows access to valuable oral histories which can be included and examined for the publication that will be published in 2013 for the Winston-Salem portion of the architectural survey conducted by the HRC in conjunction with the City-County Planning Department and the North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office.
