Informational meetings on the draft guidelines will take place on Thursday, October 17 at 6:00 p.m. and Tuesday, October 29 at 6:00 p.m. Both meetings will be held in the Bryce A. Stuart Municipal Building, Public Meeting Room, Room 530, 100 East First Street, Winston-Salem.
Once a property is designated as a Forsyth County Local Historic Landmark, the property owner or representative must apply for and receive approval from the Historic Resources Commission (HRC) to make alterations to any portion of the designated property (including interiors, if designated). Design review guidelines are in place, which establish criteria used by the HRC, HRC staff, and property owners/representatives in determining whether proposed alterations are in keeping with the character of the landmark property. Once alterations have been approved by the HRC, a Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) is issued for the project.
Periodically, design review guidelines need to be revised based on precedents set over time and the integration of new knowledge. The current landmark guidelines have been in place since 2002; HRC staff has recently updated the Local Historic Landmark guidelines. The new draft will clarify and update subject matter, illustrate appropriate and inappropriate work, and provide general information about the Certificate of Appropriateness process.The draft document is available on the HRC’s web site: http://www.forsythcountyhrc.org.
