Police Officer Physical Abilities Test (POPAT) and Release Waiver

The Winston-Salem Police Department administers a modified Police Officer Physical Abilities Test (POPAT). The Test is a timed event performed on a pass/fail basis. Applicants must complete the test in a time of 7 minutes 20 seconds or less.

PHYSICAL AGILITY TEST
Modified POPAT

  • Applicant is seat belted in the driver's seat of a car with their hands on the steering wheel
  • The clock is started when the applicant removes his/her hands from the steering wheel
  • The applicant removes his/her seat belt and exits the vehicle
  • The applicant runs 100 yards to a cone and then runs 100 yards back to the vehicle
  • The applicant is given a standard issue .40 pistol (firing pin removed) and dry fires 12 times with his/her strong hand and 6 times with his/her weak hand
  • The applicant then runs to the passenger side door of the vehicle and removes a 150 lb human body simulator and drags it 50 ft. to a set of stairs
  • The applicant drops the human body simulator at the foot of the stairs
  • The applicant then runs up and down the stairs 3 times
  • The applicant pushes open and runs through a door with 50 lbs. of resistance
  • The applicant drops to a mat and performs 10 military style pushups and 10 sit-ups
  • The applicant then runs back to the stairs and runs up and down the stairs 3 more times
  • The applicant runs to and crawls though a 40 ft. culvert
  • The applicant drops to a mat and performs 10 military style pushups and 10 sit-ups
  • The applicant runs 100 yards to a cone and then runs 100yards back
  • The clock stops when the applicant reaches the vehicle
  • Required Completion Time: 7 minutes 20 seconds

The Winston-Salem Police Department, Police Officer Physical Abilities Test is a baseline test used to determine a candidate's ability to perform the essential job functions of a Police Officer. Success on the test should not be used by candidates to gauge their level of fitness for the purposes of attending the Winston-Salem Police Academy. The Police Department Physical Abilities Test allows applicants to prepare themselves by practicing prior to their testing date. Applicants should continue to prepare themselves to be challenged physically in an academy setting if hired by the Winston-Salem Police Department.

RETEST POLICY: IF AN APPLICANT FAILS THE POLICE OFFICER PHYSICAL ABILITIES TEST HE/SHE WILL BE ALLOWED TO RETAKE THE TEST ON A SUBSEQUENT AVAILABLE TEST DATE. A SECOND FAILURE ON THE POLICE OFFICER PHYSICAL ABILITIES TEST WILL RESULT IN DISQUALIFICATION FOR A PERIOD OF ONE YEAR.

In order to participate in the Winston-Salem Police Department’s entry level testing (Reading Comprehension, and POPAT), you must sign the waiver and release form. You must bring this form with you on your testing date to participate in testing. This form will not be available on the testing date and failure to provide this form will result in ineligibility to participate in testing.

Bring this form with you on your test date. DO NOT MAIL. You will need to wear appropriate athletic attire when participating in the POPAT. You will not be allowed to participate in testing without presenting valid driver's license or State Identification Card.
