Assistant Police Chief Barry Rountree gave the following statement regarding the shooting today of two Winston-Salem police officers:

"At 10:29 a.m. the Winston-Salem Police Department received a call from a female employee of the Bojangles restaurant in the 1500 block of Peters Creek Parkway. The caller reported that she had seen her ex-husband, who was wanted on outstanding warrants.

"Police responded to the call. They identified the suspect, who fled on foot. Sgt. Mickey Hutchens and Officer Danny Clark pursued the man as he fled behind the Bojangles restaurant toward Salem Creek. Sgt. Hutchens and Officer Clark caught up with the suspect in Salem Creek and a struggle ensued. During that struggle both officers and the suspect were shot.

"All three were taken to Baptist Hospital. Sgt. Hutchens, a 27-year veteran of the Police Department, is listed in critical condition. Officer Clark, a six-year veteran, is listed in serious condition. The suspect was fatally wounded.

"In keeping with established procedures, the State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to investigate the officers’ use of their weapons. The Police Department is continuing its investigation of the case and will release more information as it becomes available."
