Assistant Chief Alonzo Thompson is a 29-year veteran of the Winston-Salem Police Department, having started his career as a Public Safety Officer in 1984. He was promoted to the ranks of Senior Police Officer in 1988, Sergeant in 1989, Lieutenant in 1995, Captain in 2002 and Assistant Chief in 2012. Assistant Chief Thompson has served in the Field Services, Investigative Services and Support Services Bureaus and Office of the Chief of Police. He has served in numerous capacities during his tenure including the following assignments: Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) Sergeant/Coordinator, Recruiting, Training and Planning Lieutenant, Field Commander, Staff Liaison Officer for the Chief of Police, Vice and Narcotics Division Commander, Professional Standards Division (Internal Affairs) Commander and District Commander in the Patrol Division.
Assistant Chief Thompson holds a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Political Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1991 the Criminal Justice Education Training and Standards Commission awarded him the State of North Carolina’s Advanced Law Enforcement Professional Certificate. Assistant Chief Thompson is a graduate of the 183rd Session of the FBI National Academy. He served as Class President of that Session, which was comprised of 250 mid- and upper-level police executives from 49 of the 50 States and 19 foreign countries. He also successfully completed the Public Executive Leadership Academy (PELA 2012) held at the School of Government at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Assistant Chief Thompson is a certified NC Law Enforcement General and Specialized Instructor who teaches Subject Control and Arrest Techniques in BLET and In-service training. He served as a member of the Winston-Salem Police Honor Guard for 24 years. Assistant Chief Thompson is an active member of the Winston-Salem Police Department’s Equality Team, and serves on the Diversity Team and the Board of Directors for First Assembly Christian School. He previously served on the Board of Directors for Exchange/SCAN (Stop Child Abuse Now). He has coached and mentored students in youth athletic leagues and schools in the Triad area.
Prior to beginning his law enforcement career, Assistant Chief Thompson served in the United States Air Force. He was commissioned as Second Lieutenant in July of 1982 and resigned his commissioned as a First Lieutenant in the United States Air Force Reserves July of 1988.
Assistant Chief Thompson is married to Catrina A. Thompson, a Police Lieutenant with the Winston-Salem Police Department. The couple has two children, Alyson Blakely and Christopher Aaron.
