Volunteers in Police Service (V.I.P.S.) Program
The Winston-Salem Police Department is pleased to announce the creation of a new Citizen Volunteer program in partnership with Volunteers in Police Service (V.I.P.S.). This program was created to help coordinate volunteer activities and make communities safer, stronger, and better prepared to respond to emergencies. This program will provide opportunities for citizens to work in a volunteer capacity inside the police department performing various clerical and administrative duties. The goal of this program is to allow volunteers the opportunity to have a direct effect on their community by assisting the Winston-Salem Police Department make Winston-Salem a better place to live, work and play. Some of the reasons that a person may wish to volunteer with their police department may include:
- To participate in purpose-driven programs that benefit your community.
- Support your local police department employees by performing duties that enable them to concentrate on public service.
- Develop valuable relationships with other volunteers, your city, and the WSPD.
- Exercise your special skills, talents, and experience in a new venue.
Completion of or enrollment in the upcoming Citizens' Police Academy is a prerequisite to be able to participate in this program. Additional information on the Citizens' Police Academy can be obtained by contacting Officer Claudia Morgan at (336) 408-8126.
V.I.P.S. Application Process
Step 1: Complete Application and Confidentiality Agreement
You must complete and sign both forms in their entirety and return them back to:

Step 2: Application Review
The Volunteer Coordinator will review your application to ensure it is complete and signed. Any application received that is incomplete will be denied.
Step 3: Interview Process
After the Application is received and reviewed, you will be contacted for an oral board interview to further discuss the position.
Step 4: Background Check and Fingerprinting
Each applicant who reaches this stage in the process will be fingerprinted along with a criminal history check, clearance for current warrants, and a driving records check. Previous employers and the 4 personal references listed will also be contacted to determine an applicants suitability to become a member of the Winston Salem V.I.P.S. Program. All written references must be received within 30 days of the original mailing date in order to be accepted.
Step 5: Acceptance or Non-Acceptance
All applicants will be notified by mail of their acceptance or non-acceptance to the program.
