Special Olympics Forsyth County is soliciting donations to enable two Forsyth County athletes to compete in the 2012 Special Olympics North America National Golf Invitational Tournament in Glendale, Ariz.
Matthew Smitherman and Lawrence Blume have been invited to compete in the Level 2 Golf (9-hole alternate shot) tournament to be held Sept. 6-10. Smitherman, 24, has been an avid golfer from more than 14 years and has been competing in Special Olympics for more than five years. Blume, 32, has been coaching and volunteering with Special Olympics Forsyth County for more than four years. This would be the first time either has played in a national tournament.
Because Special Olympics does not charge athletes to train and compete in Special Olympics, local programs are responsible for covering the cost of the tournament and travel. Donations can be made securely online at: www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/lisa-kiser/SONANationalGolfInvitational, or by mailing a donation to Special Olympics Forsyth County, 2301 N. Patterson Ave., Winston-Salem, NC 27105.
Special Olympics Forsyth County provides year-round sports training and athletic competitions in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and share friendship.
