Reading Workshop

Reading Workshop

On Saturday, March 3, 2018, W.R. Anderson, Jr. Community Center held their Reading Workshop spearheaded by Dr. Vernon Ross & Senior Recreation Center Supervisor Bryant McCorkle. This workshop was established to assist students grades K-8 with reading comprehension and sound techniques pertaining to their grade level. Facilitators included United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church, Winston-Salem State University students, Deputy City Attorney Alan Andrews, Deputy WSFCS Superintendent Kenneth Simington and W.R. Anderson, Jr. Community Center staff.

Snacks were provided free of charge to keep the children energized during their developmental learning! Each participant went home with a book of their choice and a folder that included an assessment that implemented good reading instruction to determine each student's baseline performance. Each child and facilitator received free food vouchers to Texas Roadhouse, along with tickets to the Charlotte Hornets vs. The Brooklyn Nets Basketball game for Thursday, March 8, 2018!

Recreation & Parks is looking to expand this program to other recreation centers to further promote phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, and comprehension.
