Sanitation News

Leaf collection will begin on Nov. 1. The Winston-Salem Sanitation Division will provide three leaf collections to single-family households.

The Sanitation Division has reworked its leaf routes web page to give citizens a better idea when the leaf-collection truck will be in their neighborhood. Through the Leaf Routes link of the Sanitation Division pages of the city website, residents can type in their address and get an estimated date for their leaf collection. Keep in mind that the date will be only an estimate, because inclement weather and other factors can affect the pace of leaf collection.

New automated collection trucks will be used on some routes. These trucks have a built–in collection nozzle that the driver controls from inside the cab. The trucks also have three times the capacity as the old trucks, which will speed the pace of collection.

For leaf collection follow these guidelines:

  • Rake leaves to the edge of your yard, behind the curb, and not in the street.
  • Sticks, rocks, and other debris may damage the equipment. Please, leaves only.
  • Do not park vehicles on, in front of, or near your leaves.
  • Do not put your leaves on a tarp.
  • Leaf collection is provided to single-family houses only.

Remember, it is illegal to burn leaves inside the city limits.

For year-round leaf collection, put leaves in a city yard-waste cart. Call CityLink 311 for information about how to get a yard cart.
