Season's Greenings

A message from Recycle Today Program Adminstrator Teresa Williams

At Recycle Today, we wish you a joyous holiday season, and thank you for making our recycling program a success.

We’re all familiar with the expression, “’Tis the season to eat, drink, and be merry.” Unfortunately, ‘tis also the season when Americans throw away a million more tons of trash per week between Thanksgiving and New Year’s. This holiday season, give a gift to the environment by reducing waste, choosing environmentally friendly gifts, purchasing gifts with less packaging, and conserving resources and energy.

And when it comes time to make your New Year’s resolutions, make sure your list includes reducing waste, recycling, and purchasing recycled products. They’re three simple resolutions you can keep!

Happy holidays! Let us all reduce, reuse, and recycle more in 2008.

Reminder – recycle bins out by 6 a.m.!
Don’t miss your curbside recycling pick-up. Make sure your green recycling bin is out by 6 a.m.

Reduce Holiday Trash by Shopping Green

Here are some simple tips for enjoying a “green” holiday season by reducing holiday waste:

  • Not sure what to get someone? How about a gift certificate? That way, you know the gift will be kept or used.
  • Consider nonmaterial gifts. Tickets to a sporting event, movie, concert, or a play are a real treat that don't require much packaging.
  • Make a charitable donation in someone’s name.
  • Thousands of paper and plastic bags end up in landfills every year. When you go shopping, bring your own reusable bags and reduce the number of bags thrown out. Tell store clerks that you don’t need a bag for small or oversized purchases.
  • Think durable! Consider how long an item will last before you buy it.
  • Always look for items made with recycled content.
  • Wrap gifts in recycled or reused wrapping paper or comic papers. Remember to save used wrapping paper and bows.
  • Send recycled-content greeting cards to reduce the amount of virgin paper used during the holidays.
  • Send electronic greeting cards to reduce paper waste.
  • Recycle paper greeting cards.
  • As you make room for new holiday treasures, consider donating unwanted toys, electronics, and clothing to charity instead of throwing them away.
What to do with all that cardboard?

When it’s time to put the presents away, recycle gift boxes made of chipboard in your green recycling bin (chipboard is gray or brown on the inside, such as most cereal boxes). Corrugated cardboard can flattened or cut down to no more than three-by-three-feet and placed with your curbside recycling, too. If you have LOTS of corrugated, take it to one of the cardboard drop-off bins.

The Recycle Today web site has a list of cardboard drop-off bins

Recycle your old computer

If the holidays bring a new computer to your house, remember: You can recycle your old computer at any attended Goodwill donation location in Forsyth County.

Leaf Reminder!
Autumn leaves

Leaf collection for single-family houses has started. On Nov. 26, crews began making the second of three passes through every neighborhood in the city. To assist citizens in tracking leaf collection, the Sanitation Division has created a new Web page with a map showing the progress of leaf-collection crews. The third pass through the city will be begin at the end of December. If your leaves are raked to the curb by Dec. 29, they will be picked up by Jan. 12.

September: Van Danzy, William Hines, Stoney Jones and Arto Harden in Truck 439; and Moses Belton, Donald Clark and Reginald Tindal in Truck 447.

October: Van Danzy, William Hines, Stoney Jones and Arto Harden in Truck 439.

New recycling law affects ABC permit holders

Effective Jan. 1, 2008, certain holders of ABC permits will be required to separate, store and recycle all recyclable beverage containers.
