The Transportation department has a focus on moving people and goods safely and efficiently on the surface transportation system in Winston-Salem and Forsyth County. We aspire to plan, design, construct, operate and maintain our system so that congestion, delay and traffic accidents are minimized while transportation choices and emergency services are maximized.

Transportation Updates

2014 Public Transportation Grant Applications

Applications are now being taken for the Job Access Reverse Commute (JARC, Section 5307) and Enhanced Mobility of Seniors and Individuals with Disabilities (Section 5310) grant programs for Fiscal Year 2014. Applications must be returned no later than May 19, 2014. Learn about the JARC and Section 5310 grants and get an application.

Business 40 Project Streetscape Design

The City of Winston-Salem is requesting Letters of Interest/Statement of Qualifications for a comprehensive streetscape design and cost estimate of Business 40 from west of Fourth Street to east of Church Street. Letters should be submitted by April 17, 2014. Get more information about the requested services. 

Urban Circulator Draft Alternative Analysis Report

The final draft of the Urban Circulator Alternative Analysis Report has been produced, and is now going before City Council for consideration. Find out more about the Urban Circulator Study.

Project Updates

  • Salem Creek Greenway Detour
    • The portion of the Salem Creek Greenway between Main Street and Vargrave Street is closed for construction of the Salem Creek Connector. The closure began in March 2014 and is estimated to be in place for 18 months.

  • Salem Creek Connector Project           
    • Diggs Boulevard/South Martin Luther King Jr. Drive intersection is permanently closed as of January 2, 2014.
    • U.S. 52 interchange with Vargrave Street is permanently closed as of January 6, 2014.

Road Closures

    Columbine Drive
    (one lane), Old Town Drive to Woods Road
    April 1-11, 2014
    A contractor has been given permission to close a lane of Columbine Drive between Old Town Drive and Woods Road from March 24-28, 2014, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. to install a water line. The contractor is responsible for all traffic control. UPDATE: The contractor extended the lane closure from April 1-11, 2014, for additional work involving the water connections and storm water. As before the contractor is responsible for all traffic control.
  • Marshall Street (two lanes), 4th Street to 5th Street
    April 11, 2014
    A contractor has been given permission to close lanes of southbound Marshall Street between 4th Street and 5th Street on April 11, 2014, between the hours of 8:30 - 11:00 a.m. to pump concrete onto the Cherry-Marshall Deck. The contractor is responsible for all traffic control. One lane of Marshall Street will be maintained during the closure.

Sidewalk and Parking Closures

  • Old County Courthouse, Main Street, Liberty Street, 3rd Street and 4th Street
    Beginning March 31, 2014
    The contractor redeveloping the old County Courthouse located between Main Street, Liberty Street, 3rd Street and 4th Street will begin construction on Monday, March 31, 2014. Fencing will be installed around the site blocking the on-street parking and sidewalks. Signs will be installed advising pedestrians to use the sidewalks opposite the site.
