Business 40 Bicycle and Pedestrian Infrastructure Improvements
The City of Winston-Salem and the North Carolina Department of Transportation are developing a series of bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure improvements as part of the efforts to upgrade and streamline I-40 (Business) through downtown Winston-Salem. The highway aspect of the project will include removing the existing pavement and replacing it with new concrete pavement. The project will also modernize the entrance and exit ramps and replace most of the bridges on and over Business 40 to meet current traffic demands and modern design specifications. When those bridges are redesigned, bicycle and pedestrian improvements will be included to accommodate walking and cycling trips along and across the Business 40 corridor. Most notably, the City of Winston-Salem has proposed a multi-use path for cyclists and pedestrian that would parallel the highway from Lockland Avenue to Liberty Street, providing a safe and comfortable active transportation option with separation from motor vehicle traffic.

WSTA Bus Stop Improvement Study
The Winston-Salem Transit Authority (WSTA) is currently in the process of restructuring its routes to improve efficiency and service. In a parallel effort, WSTA has undertaken a bus stop improvement study to investigate stop locations, improve the the rider experience and perception, and address accessibility, safety, and equity. The study addresses questions of how to include route and system information at stop locations and how to improve accessibility and safety through infrastructure improvements, including the installation of concrete pads, bus shelters, benches, and other features. Old Salem Infrastructure Improvements
Most of the sidewalks within the Old Salem area are constructed of brick or stone and have been displaced due to large trees, some of which have exceeded their life expectancy or are otherwise in poor condition. This project will reconstruct sidewalks in a way that maintains the historic character of Old Salem in conformance with American with Disabilities Act (ADA) sidewalk requirements for historic preservation districts; evaluate the removal and replacement of trees as recommended by a certified arborist; and street lighting options will also be evaluated.

- Union Cross Road Project
- Silver Creek Trail at the intersection of Union Cross Road is permanently closed as of July 23, 2014. Silver Creek Trail will be barricaded in the short term until the cul-de-sac can be installed in the coming months per the project plans. Three portable message signs have been placed on site near the intersection to advise area residents of the closure.
- Salem Creek Greenway Detour
- The portion of the Salem Creek Greenway between Main Street and Vargrave Street is closed for construction of the Salem Creek Connector. The closure began in March 2014 and is estimated to be in place until November 2016.

- Diggs Boulevard/South Martin Luther King Jr. Drive intersection is permanently closed as of January 2, 2014.
- U.S. 52 interchange with Vargrave Street is permanently closed as of January 6, 2014.

Road, Sidewalk and Parking Closures
- 26th Street and Dunleith Avenue Intersection
July 25 - July 26, 2016
Piedmont Natural Gas will close the intersection of 26th Street and Dunleith Avenue on July 25 and July 26, 2016 from 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. to cap off old gas lines. The intersection will be opened at night. The contractor is responsible for all traffic control and detours will be in place.
- W. 4th Street, Between Poplar Street and Spring Street
July 23, 2016
A contractor has been given permission to close a lane of 4th Street between Poplar Street and Spring Street on July 23, 2016 from 7:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. to hoist material onto the roof of 626 W. 4th Street. The contractor will use flaggers to maintain two way traffic. The contractor is responsible for all traffic control.
- Winston Lake Road
July 25, 2016
Winston Lake Road will be close from Waterworks Road to the lake beginning on July 25, 2016 to facilitate the construction of a waterpark. Traffic onto Winston Lake Park will be detoured via Old Greensboro Road back to Winston Lake Road. The closure will remain in place for at least 6 weeks.
- 4 1/2 Street, Between Broad Street and Summit Street
August 1, 2016 - August 12, 2016
A contractor has been given permission to close one lane of 4 1/2 Street between Broad Street and Summit Street from August 1, 2016 to August 12, 2016 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. to perform repair work at 809 W. 4 ½ Street. The contractor will maintain 1 lane and will use flaggers to control traffic. The contractor is responsible for all traffic control.
