City News

To alleviate any potential hazard to public health, the city cleaned up a sewage spill Thursday evening on the property of the Olde North Village Apartments at 3490 Triangle Drive. The owner of the apartments will be billed for the cost.

The city responded after the City Link call center received complaints at 10:57 a.m. and 11:03 a.m. Thursday about the spill. Utilities personnel investigated and learned that the spill was caused by a broken sewer pump on Olde North Village property and which belongs to the company that owns the apartments.

Although blockages and spills on private property are the responsibility of the property owner, in this case, there was difficulty in reaching the company in Topeka, Kan., that owns the apartment and the local manager could not be reached. Because the spill constituted a public health hazard, the Utilities Division hired a contractor to clean up the spill and cover the area with lime and straw. The contractor also pumped out a sewage lift station that was also backed up.
