Mayor Allen Joines is asking citizens and local businesses to assist the more than 120 people who have been displaced by apartment fires this week.

Specifically, Joines is asking the operators of furnished apartments or hotels that are equipped for extended stays to volunteer their services. Lodging should be handicapped accessible.

“Lodging is the most important part of this recovery effort, but the American Red Cross also needs financial assistance to provide care,” Joines said. Joines pledged $1,000 to the Red Cross relief effort this morning. The Red Cross is not seeking donations of food or clothing as part of this relief effort.

A fire Tuesday at the Alder’s Point Apartments on Mock Street displaced 97 residents. A fire last night at Colonial Heights Apartments on North Chestnut Street displaced 27 residents. Residents from both complexes were taken to a temporary emergency shelter set up at the William C. Sims Recreation Center.

To donate lodging or money call the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, 724-0511, or mail your contribution to 659 Coliseum Drive, Winston-Salem, N.C., 27106.
