The Winston-Salem Fire Department is accepting applications for its inaugural Citizen Fire Safety Academy, Oct. 11-15.

The academy will be held five consecutive evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and will cover such subjects as the organization of the Fire Department, fire prevention, firefighting vehicles and equipment and a firefighting "field day."

The Citizen Fire Safety Academy is free and is open to all. Applicants under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. The class is limited to 25 people. For more information or to apply (by October 5), call Jazmine Pierce at 773-7965 or send an e-mail to jpierce@cityofwsfire.org.

The Citizen Fire Safety Academy is sponsored by the Winston-Salem Fire Department, the Burn Center of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center and the Northwest North Carolina Chapter of the American Red Cross.
