The Winston-Salem Fire Department is observing October as Fire Prevention Month with a variety of activities throughout the month.
During the Dixie Classic Fair, Sept. 30 – Oct. 9, attendees can go through the Fire Safety Smoke Trailer to learn what to do in case their home catches on fire. The Fire Department will be handing out fire-safety information and will hold vehicle extrication demonstrations at 3 p.m. Sept. 30 and Oct. 7 to show how car accident victims are removed from vehicles. The Fire Department will be set up near the Northwest Gate.
On Oct. 6 the Fire Department will present information on cooking safety during the Best Health cooking class at 1 p.m. at Hanes Mall. Participants will receive oven mitts & chip clip magnets with fire safety messages on them.
During Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 9-15, fire drills and fire-safety presentations will be held at all city recreation centers. Firefighters will conduct the public education programs about fire safety and fire prevention at select local schools. The National Fire Protection Association theme for Fire Prevention Week is ''Protect Your Family from Fire.''
On Oct. 11, the department will hold a cooking safety demonstration at 11 a.m. in the kitchen at South Fork Recreation Center, 4403 Country Club Road. The demonstration will focus on the danger of leaving food unattended on a stove and how to be fire-safe in the kitchen.
