The Winston-Salem Police Department is partnering with Target Corp. to provide a brighter holiday for needy children in Winston-Salem.
As part of Target's national "Shop with a Cop" program, 15 local children will be paired Saturday with Winston-Salem police officers and receive $100 gift cards to buy Christmas presents for members of their immediate families. The participating children were recommended by Family Services Inc., said Officer Ryan Hagan of the Police Department's Crime Prevention Unit. "This is an opportunity for children to have a positive interaction with police officers," Hagan said.
This is the first year that the Police Department is participating in the Shop with a Cop program. Target started the program several years ago, according to Dan Lum, the manager of the Target store at 5420 University Parkway. This year, Target Corp. is donating more than $120,000 worth of gift cards to law enforcement agencies in 60 communities throughout the nation.
Target is also the national sponsor for the annual National Night Out program. Locally, Target also partners with the Police Department for the Drug Free NC program.
