The Winston-Salem Fire Department will conduct a controlled burn Wednesday on two identically-furnished rooms to demonstrate how fast a fire can start from common fire hazards, and how fires can be prevented.
The demonstration will take place at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, at Fire Station No. 1, 651 N. Marshall St., Winston-Salem.
Two portable 8-by-8-foot rooms built for this exercise will demonstrate flashover, fire department response time, and the effectiveness of fire sprinklers. One room will be protected by a fire sprinkler.
A narrator will describe the various stages of fire, and firefighters will be on site to extinguish the fire.
The demonstration is being financed by a stipend from the Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition. It will be taped for use in fire-prevention presentations.
