Men and women interested in becoming firefighters can learn more about their prospective career at one of three recruiting fairs the Fire Department is holding next week.

The fairs are intended to expand the diversity of the recruiting pool and educate the public that the firefighting field is a challenging and rewarding career, says Jazmine Kilpatrick, the community educator for the Fire Department. The fairs will provide an opportunity to talk to firefighters, watch a video demonstration of the agility test that firefighters must pass, and fill out an application.

“We will have firefighters there to share their personal stories about their career as a firefighter,” Kilpatrick said. “Women fire personnel will be on site to talk to other women interested in the fire service, and Spanish-speaking firefighters will be on site to talk to members of the Hispanic population.

“People will have the opportunity to do a practice dummy drag, and a representative from Human Resources will be available to answer questions about our application and hiring process.”

The fairs will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. at these locations:

  • Tuesday, Aug. 23, Gateway YWCA multipurpose room, 1300 South Main Street
  • Wednesday, Aug. 24, The Rush, 420 Jonestown Road
  • Thursday, Aug. 25, Winston Lake YMCA multipurpose room, 901 Waterworks Road

The application deadline for the next firefighter training class is Sept. 2. For more information go to www.CityofWSFire.org.
