The city of Winston-Salem received two national awards during the annual meeting this month of the City-County Communications & Marketing Association, the national professional organization for marketing departments of local government.
"The Waltz of the Flying Butts” and the Legacy Music Video won 2011 Silver Circle (second place) awards for public service announcements and promotional video, respectively.
“The Waltz of the Flying Butts” is a 30-second PSA produced by WSTV 13 to support Keep Winston-Salem Beautiful’s “Every Butt Hurts” anti-cigarette litter campaign. The spot shows images of people throwing away cigarette butts, in time with an orchestral waltz. It ends with the tagline: “Our city is not an ashtray.” The judges called it, “Elegant, yet direct in conveying the problem of cigarette litter in the downtown area.”
The Legacy Music Video was produced by WSTV 13 to promote public participation in the update of the Legacy Comprehensive Plan. The video features a bluegrass band in locations throughout Winston-Salem and Forsyth County, singing about the issues the Legacy 2030 update will address. The judges praised it as “a wonderfully creative collaboration... ‘One hundred thousand people, where will they go?’ Planning won't be a problem after seeing this video!"
The Waltz of the Flying Butts and the Legacy Music Video are posted on the city’s website (www.CityofWS.org.). They can also be seen on the city’s YouTube channel.
Counting this year’s awards, the city has received 22 national awards from the City-County Communications and Marketing Association over the past 11 years.
