The welcome home party at Smith Reynolds Airport Saturday night for the Winston-Salem State University football team has been moved up a half hour to better coincide with the team’s expected return.
Mayor Allen Joines is inviting citizens to come to the airport to greet the Rams football players, win or lose, when they return to Winston-Salem after the NCAA Division II championship game Saturday night.
The Rams are now scheduled to arrive at 9 p.m. at Smith Reynolds Airport. The mayor is asking that supporters arrive at 8:30 p.m. in case the plane arrives ahead of schedule. Supporters are encouraged to bring welcome back and congratulatory signs.
The Rams will play Valdosta State University for the Division II national championship at 1 p.m. Saturday in Florence, Alabama.
Mayor Allen Joines and Valdosta Mayor John Gayle have wagered a friendly bet on their teams. Jones will send Gayle some Krispy Kreme doughnuts, Dewey’s sugar cake and Texas Pete hot sauce if Valdosta State wins. If the Rams win, Gayle will send Joines a gift box of Georgia pecans.
