Mayor Allen Joines issued the following statement today about former Rep. Logan Burke. Burke, a retired educator and two-term state legislator, the husband of Council Member and Mayor Pro Tem Vivian H. Burke, and the father of Judge L. Todd Burke, died this morning after a lengthy illness. He was 79.
“Logan Burke had a long and distinguished record of service to the citizens of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County. During an education career that lasted three decades, he was a teacher, coach, athletic director, assistant principal, and principal. He was a role model and mentor to the thousands of young people who crossed his path.
“Afterwards, he served the citizens of Forsyth County as a member of the N.C. House of Representatives from 1987 to 1991. And he served his community a member of the NAACP and Grace Presbyterian Church and as a volunteer for the United Negro College Fund. His lifetime of civic leadership was rightly honored by the Black Political Awareness League with an award for outstanding service and dedication to the community.
“On behalf of the other members of the City Council, I extend my deepest sympathies to Mayor Pro Tem Burke and Judge Burke and the rest of the Burke family. Our community has been diminished by his death.
