All city residents are invited to attend the Blue Moon Gallery Hop in the Arts District and participate in a community toast to Winston-Salem on Friday, May 10, as part of the city’s four-day centennial celebration.
The toast, with a special centennial ale crafted for the occasion by Foothills Brewing or Primo Water’s “centennial” water, will be followed by a musical tribute to Winston-Salem by the Vagabond Saints Society.
Also during the gallery hop, participating galleries and shops will be redeeming “Centennial Bucks,” the police and fire departments will have displays of historical artifacts and the winners and finalists of the centennial art competition in the city-county schools will be displayed. The first 100 people wearing centennial T-shirts will receive free popcorn or ice cream.
The gallery hop will begin at 5 p.m. with entertainment by the jazz bands from Reagan, Reynolds and East Forsyth high schools. The community toast will be led by Mayor Allen Joines and members of the City Council at 7 p.m.
After the toast the Vagabond Saints Society will pay tribute to Winston-Salem’s rich tradition of popular music by performing songs by such acts as the Five Royales, the dBs, Ben Folds, Let’s Active and more.
Centennial Bucks are gift certificates, which the city of Winston-Salem will match dollar for dollar while supplies last, that can be redeemed at participating galleries and shops only during the Blue Moon Gallery Hop. Centennial Bucks must be purchased by May 3 through the centennial website, http://W-S100Years.com. The supply is limited.
The winners and finalists of the schools’ centennial art competition will be displayed at Steele Group Architects, 217 W. Sixth Street. Historical Police Department artifacts will be displayed at 629 N. Trade St. and Fire Department artifacts will be displayed at 619 N. Trade St.
A booth at Trade and Cherry streets will be selling centennial T-shirts and other commemorative items and serve as a pick-up location for pre-ordered Centennial Bucks.
