The Sanitation Division and Recycle Today have started Cart & Bin
, a free electronic newsletter that offers news and tips about sanitation and recycling services. The newsletter can be read online or delivered by e-mail to subscribers.
The winter edition will be available Dec. 1 and includes a special section on how to have a "green Christmas." The section includes tips on "green" shopping to reduce packaging and waste, tips on recycling holiday waste, and information about setting out Christmas trees after the holidays so the city can turn them into mulch.
The first issue also lists changes in the Sanitation collection schedules during the holidays, information about leaf collection in residential neighborhoods, and information about recycling old computers at Goodwill drop-off centers.
A new edition will be published quarterly, said Johnnie Taylor, the sanitation director. "Sanitation is one of those city services that all citizens depend on, week-in and week-out," Taylor said, "so we wanted to establish a way for our citizens to receive information online about the city’s sanitation and recycling services. Also, we hope to add a feature about our crews of the month, to highlight our employees who are doing an excellent job."
Teresa Williams, the city recycling program administrator, said she hopes the newsletter will boost recycling by raising awareness of the program. "Also, if we have program changes, we can use the newsletter to get the word out about that."
