Fire Department - June 3, 2014
The Winston-Salem Fire Department will honor the area’s World War II veterans by providing a special send-off for their trip to the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Va., on the 70th anniversary of the Normandy invasion, and is inviting citizens to join them.
Two ladder trucks will suspend a large U.S. flag between their extended ladders and form an arch for the bus convoy to drive under as they depart for the memorial at 7 a.m. Friday, June 6, from Hanes Mall. The firefighters who staff the trucks will salute the veterans as they pass.
The Fire Department was happy to assist when contacted about participating, said Assistant Fire Chief Harry Brown. “To give back to the World War II veterans who gave so much for this country and this community – it’s an honor to have our guys salute them.’’
The fire trucks will be staged in the parking lot between the mall and the Carolina Ale House. Off-duty firefighters, family members and citizens are encouraged to come out and show their support.
