The women’s and men’s softball teams that are the reigning National Senior Games champions for their age groups will begin defending their titles during the Piedmont Plus Senior Games Senior Softball Tournament on Saturday, June 7, in Winston-Salem.
The Wannabees 60-plus women’s team from Winston-Salem, and the Mock-Beroth Bombers 75-plus men’s team also from Winston-Salem, are among the 16 softball teams participating in the tournament.
Competing will be 10 men’s and women’s teams from Forsyth and Stokes counties hoping to qualify for the N.C. Senior Games tournament to be held in Raleigh Sept. 8-11, as well as six teams from other counties that are playing in the tournament to hone their game. The N.C. Senior Tournament is the qualifying tournament for the next National Senior Games to be held in Minneapolis, Minn., in 2015.
Games will be played at Washington Park Softball Complex and the Hanes Hosiery Recreation Center, 501 Reynolds Blvd.
The Wannabees and the Mock-Beroth Bombers were the gold medal winners for their respective age groups at the previous National Senior Games, held in 2013 in Houston. The Wannabes will play Saturday on field 4 at the Washington Park Softball Complex, along with other women’s 55-64 teams. The Mock-Beroth Bombers will play at Hanes Hosiery along with three other men’s teams in the 70 and older bracket.
Also at Washington Park, field 1 will host men 50 – 59, field 2 will host men 65-69 and field 3 will host men 60-64.
