“Great Main Street” Award to be presented Sunday
Winston-Salem will be presented with a 2014 Great Main Street Award about 4 p.m. during the Second Sunday on Fourth activities on Fourth Street on Sunday, Aug. 10. Roger Bardsley of the American Planning Association - North Carolina Chapter will present the award to Mayor Allen Joines during a break between bands.
The award is part of the chapter’s Great Places in North Carolina program, created in 2012 to highlight North Carolina’s great places and the communities and people that have created them.
Fourth Street was recognized in the Professionals’ Category. The panel of professional planners who judged the dozens of nominations based the award on “the combination of existing vitality and proactive dedication of the city and community over time to the success of Fourth Street.”
The awards celebrate the great communities throughout the state and are given in both Professionals’ and People’s Choice categories. The professionals’ category includes a detailed nomination process that requires in-depth descriptions of the work and partnerships that went into creating the main street.
Tryon Street in uptown Charlotte and Fayetteville Street in downtown Raleigh have been given a Great Main Street designation in previous years.
Second Sunday on Fourth activities include free music and kids’ activities and are held from 3 to 6 p.m. at Fourth and Cherry streets on the second Sunday of the month from May through October. This month’s Second Sunday on Fourth will feature music by Dan River Girls, The Hot Seats and Jessica Lea Mayfield.
