Office of the Mayor - Aug. 6, 2014

Mayor Allen Joines issued the following statement today about the death of former Winston-Salem Mayor John R. Surratt, who died Tuesday at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home:

“On behalf of the city and its 237,000 residents, I extend my condolences to the family of Mayor Surratt. Our community has lost a faithful servant who worked tirelessly for the good of Winston-Salem both as our elected mayor and as a private citizen over the decades that followed.

“While in office, Mayor Surratt started the first downtown development program, initiated our Sister Cities Program and worked to improve transportation throughout the city. As a private citizen, he continued to serve the community through the activities of the Rotary Club, the Winston-Salem Chamber of Commerce and the Forsyth County Bar Association. His life of service set an example for all of our citizens.”

Surratt, who would have turned 86 on Thursday, was just 33 years old when he was elected mayor. He served one term, from 1961 – 63.
