West Suburban Area Plan Update

Adopted 2018

The West Suburban Area Plan Update (PDF) has been adopted by the City of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County. The Forsyth County Board of Commissioners adopted the plan on August 2, 2018, and the Winston-Salem City Council adopted the plan on June 18, 2018. The City-County Planning Board recommended approval of the plan on April 12, 2018. The plan update will guide future area land use and public investment decisions including recommendations for:

  • Community facilities
  • Design and appearance
  • Economic development
  • Historic preservation
  • Housing and community development
  • Transportation

Planning Area Boundary

The West Suburban Planning Area (PDF) encompasses approximately 19,800 acres and contains a population of 46,000. The planning area is bounded:

  • On the east by Silas Creek Parkway
  • On the north by Reynolda Road
  • On the south by Business 40 and US 421
  • On the west by the Lewisville municipal limits and the proposed western leg of the Northern Beltway

Approximately 73% of the land area is in the City of Winston-Salem, with 34% of the total area in the Northwest Ward, 34% of the area in the West Ward, and 5% in the Southwest Ward. Approximately 27% of the total planning area is in unincorporated Forsyth County.
