Plan Status - ADOPTED 2019

Peters Creek Growth Corridor MapThe Peters Creek Parkway Growth Corridor Plan was recommended for approval by the Planning Board on June 27, 2019, and was adopted by the Winston-Salem City Council on October 7, 2019 for the portion of the planning area within the municipal boundaries. The Forsyth County Board of Commissioners adopted the plan on November 14, 2019 for portions of the planning area within unincorporated Forsyth County. The plan includes specific improvements for development or redevelopment to key parcels along the corridor as well as guidelines defining character and aesthetics.

The kickoff meeting for the Peters Creek Parkway corridor plan was held on November 15, 2018, where input was received from residents on how they would like the corridor to develop in the future. For the purposes of this corridor plan, the Peters Creek corridor from Business 40 to the Davidson County line has been divided into three sections: North, Center, and South (see corridor map [JPG]). Sections are broken down as follows:

  • The north section examines the area between US 421 (Business 40) and Interstate 40.
  • The center section examines the area between Interstate 40 and the activity center at Stafford Village Boulevard (Walmart).
  • The south section examines the area from the activity center at Stafford Village Boulevard to the Davidson County line.

This plan will expand on the work already completed in the South Suburban Area Plan Update adopted in 2017, particularly as it relates to design and appearance. A Winston-Salem Department of Transportation initiated Peters Creek Parkway Corridor Study, whose boundaries correspond with the north section of this plan, was completed in 2014.

Community feedback from the kickoff meeting was presented at the second meeting on January 29, 2019. Citizens also worked with staff on establishing design guidelines for each corridor section and more specific design recommendations for a strategic parcel in each section at this meeting. These community guidelines/recommendations were used to prepare a development framework for site design concepts in each corridor section, which was presented at the third community meeting on Tuesday, March 26, 2019. A drop-in session was held on Tuesday, April 30, 2019, to review and comment on the complete draft corridor plan.
