The principal work of the Commission is carried out within committees that meet once a month. All meetings are open to the public.

Method of Appointment

Eight members are appointed by the City Council upon the recommendation of the Mayor Pro Tempore; the Forsyth County Commissioners shall appoint seven members. A minimum of four City and four County appointees shall have demonstrated special experience or education in a design field, such as:

  • Architecture
  • Historic preservation
  • Horticulture
  • Land use planning
  • Landscape architecture
  • Another closely related field

Appointees must reside within Forsyth County.

Number of Members

The Community Appearance Commission of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County (CAC) is a 15-member advisory board (PDF) appointed by the Winston-Salem City Council and Forsyth County Board of Commissioners.

Authority for Creation

The authority for establishing the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Community Appearance Commission is conferred by Chapter 160A, Article 19, Part 7, of the North Carolina General Statutes. The Commission was created by the adoption of an ordinance by the City Council and the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners on November 21, 1988 and December 19, 1988, respectively.

Purpose / Function

The purpose of the Commission is to enhance and improve the visual quality and aesthetic character of Forsyth County and the City of Winston-Salem for the education, pleasure, and enrichment of City and County residents.
