Walk-ins are welcome but, whenever possible, appointments are preferred. Employees can be seen without a co-pay for non-work related illnesses and injuries. Medical tests to diagnose strep throat, flu, diabetes and dipstick urinalysis can also be performed at no cost to employees. The Nurse Practitioner can write prescriptions, provide confidential health counseling, make medical referrals and treat a wider variety of health problems.

Please note that Identification Badges cannot be made during Nurse Practitioner hours.

Medical Clinic

Employee Medical Services offers a clinic where employees can be treated for on-the-job illnesses or injuries or refers employees to other health agencies. Employees may also visit our office for minor non- work related injuries or illnesses. Nurses provide first aid treatment, blood pressure checks, personal health consultations, and over-the-counter (OTC) medicines to treat headaches, cold/sinus symptoms, seasonal allergies and more, all at no cost to employees.

Employee Medical offers employee classes on smoking cessation, diabetes management, weight loss, and other health-related areas. As a reminder, employees with life-threatening medical emergencies such as the following can be adequately treated in an emergency room only:

  • Chest pain
  • Dizziness that prevents standing or walking
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Profuse bleeding
  • Seizures
  • Shortness of breath
  • Slurred speech

Announcement - Expanded Hours

Effective March 27, 2017 we have expanded Nurse Practitioner hours! We are now open noon to 5 p.m. on Monday and Thursday and 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesday and Wednesday.

How to Take Online Wellness Classes

As an alternative to taking city-administered classes, city employees can fulfill their wellness class requirement by participating in online wellness programs offered by Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC).

Go to their website (If you do not have a log in, you must register for member services. You will need your BCBSNC member card to do so. If you have any issues please contact BCBSNC customer service. Their number is located on the back of your insurance card.) After registering or logging in, choose Wellness at the top and then click on the Wellness Activities link on the left to access these options:

  • Healthy Living Conversations - Choose from 15 online, interactive conversations on such topics as stress management, healthy thinking and healthy eating
  • Online Monthly Seminars - Fun and engaging online seminars on a variety of wellness topics
