Returned Check Policy

If payment of your check is refused due to insufficient funds (including uncollected funds) or because you have no account at that bank, we will electronically debit your bank account for the amount of the check.

Additionally, if payment of your check is refused, your bank account will be charged a processing fee in the maximum amount allowed by state law each time your check is presented for payment.

Credit Card Acceptance

The City of Winston-Salem accepts debit and credit ("bank") card payments for a wide variety of goods and services. The City absorbs the card company and banking fees without charging the customer a convenience fee in order to encourage the use of internet and other electronic forms of payment.

Recently, large companies have implemented the use of bank cards to pay bills owed to the City. This has significantly increased the cost of bank card acceptance. In order to control these costs, the City is implementing limits on the amounts and number of transactions that can be paid using bank cards.

Bank Card Payment Limitations

Effective September 4, 2012, the City will only accept bank card payments up to a total of $2,500 in any thirty day period for:

  • Business licenses
  • Inspections
  • Mortgages
  • Parking tickets
  • Permits
  • Property assessments
  • Storm water bills
  • Utility bills
  • Yard cart sticker/bins
  • All other general billings for City services

A limit of ten transactions per bank card per thirty day period will apply and transactions less than $5 will not be processed.

Checks and cash are acceptable forms for payment.
