Qualifying Events for Benefit Changes

Family Status Changes

Generally, you can only change your benefits choices during the annual benefits enrollment period. However, you can change your applicable benefit plans, such as health, dental, flexible spending accounts, and dependent life, during the year if you have a family status change. Family status changes include:

  • Becoming eligible for Medicare or Medicaid during the year
  • Birth, adoption, or placement for adoption of an eligible child
  • Change in residence or work site that affects your eligibility for coverage (for example: moving out of medical plan's network area)
  • A change in your child's eligibility for benefits (for example: aging out)
  • Change in your or your spouse's work status that affects benefits eligibility (for example: starting a new job, leaving a job, changing from part-time to full-time, a strike or lockout, starting or returning from an unpaid leave-of-absence)
  • Death of your spouse or covered child
  • A significant change in your or your spouse's health coverage attributable to your spouse's employment
  • You get divorced or legally separated
  • You get married

Notifying Human Resources

If you have a family status change, you must notify Human Resources within 30 days of the change. Depending on the type of change, you may need to provide proof of the change (for example: a copy of a marriage license or birth certificate).

If you do not notify Human Resources within 30 days, you will have to wait until the next annual enrollment period to make benefits changes unless you have another family status change. Any changes you make to your benefits choices must be directly related to the family status change.
