Procedures to Reclaim Bicycles

The Winston-Salem Police Department Evidence Management Section encourages owners of a lost or stolen bicycle to file a report of the loss or theft and maintain a sufficient description of the bicycle in order to make a property claim if the bicycle is recovered.

If an owner is identified, a letter is mailed to the owner explaining the process for claiming the bicycle. When an owner is not known, North Carolina General Statues mandates the disposition of bicycles after 60 days of unclaimed storage. Bicycles meeting 60 days of unclaimed storage status may be released to a 501 (c) (3) organization as provided by law. Nonprofit agencies interested in possessing the unclaimed bicycles must provide a copy of the Internal Revenue Services declaration stating their non-profit status.
