Detective B. W. Hatcher, Corporal B. K. Croke, Investigator A. J. Boles & Officer B. J. Thomas

Officers with the Winston-Salem Police Department attempted to apprehend a wanted fugitive in the parking lot of a local business. The officers were performing a vehicle blocking technique on the suspect vehicle with Corporal M. D. Griffith and Detective B. W. Hatcher operating the vehicle directly behind the suspect vehicle. As Corporal Griffith was exiting his vehicle, the suspect intentionally backed into Corporal Griffith's vehicle knocking Corporal Griffith to the ground. As the suspect continued to push Corporal Griffith's vehicle backward, Corporal Griffith became trapped and drug underneath his own vehicle. The suspect then fled the scene before being apprehended a short distance later.

Detective B. W. Hatcher, Corporal B. K. Croke, Investigator A. J. Boles and Officer B. J. Thomas immediately responded to assist Corporal Griffith. These officers were able to quickly free the trapped officer from a life-threatening position underneath his vehicle. Corporal Griffith stated, There is no doubt that if the officers who pulled me out hadn't been on the scene and did what they did I could have suffocated, trapped under my own car.

Corporal Griffith was transported to a local medical facility for emergency medical treatment. Due to the quick actions and life-saving measures of Detective Hatcher, Corporal Croke, Investigator Boles, and Officer Thomas, a fellow officer's life was saved. We are honored to present Detective Hatcher, Corporal Croke, Investigator Boles, and Officer Thomas with a Certificate of Commendation and the Winston-Salem Police Department's Life-Saving Commendation Pin.
