Internships

The City of Winston-Salem Human Relations Department offers (virtual, as needed) Spring and Summer internships. 


The City Winston-Salem Human Relations Department Internship Program is to provide a professional, hands-on opportunity to learn, develop, and apply independent and team-oriented planning, organizing, leading, and evaluating skills. Interns will experience working with community stakeholders and the public in the areas of fair housing law and investigations; landlord-tenant mediation; and cultural relations.

Internship Requirements

  • University coursework related to human relations areas, including political science, social work, law, gender studies, or foreign languages 
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Complete a City of Winston-Salem application
  • Able to pass background check and drug test
  • Minimum overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 is required.
  • Have a valid driver license and reliable transportation

 Internship Details

  • Internships are unpaid (unless otherwise stated for graduate students)
  • Academic internship requirements must be submitted, if selected for an interview
  • Internship hours vary based on academic requirements
  • Completion of minimum 10 hours of weekly internship hours 
  • Paid graduate student interns seeking a practicum must have a university/college academic advisor contact the department’s director on their behalf.

Applications must be submitted, according to the timeline below, to allow sufficient time for the hiring process. If a deadline has passed, there are no guarantees that an internship opportunity can be offered:

Unpaid undergraduate student internship requests should be received by: 

  • Spring Internship:                       December 1
  • Summer Internship:                    May1
  • Fall Internship:                            August 1 

Paid graduate student internship requests should be received by: 

  • Spring Internship:                     November 15
  • Summer Internship:                  April 15
  • Fall Internship:                          July 15
