Fire Investigations

All fires occurring in Winston-Salem are investigated by the Winston-Salem Fire Department per North Carolina General Statute 58-79-1 and City of Winston-Salem Code of Ordinances Chapter 22, Section 22-6(a)(7).  Fire suppression personnel have the initial responsibility to investigate the origin and cause of all fires. Fire investigators assigned to the Fire and Life Safety Branch conduct follow-up investigations in the event the fire suppression officer is unable to determine the origin and cause of the fire. Fire Investigators are also involved in all fires resulting in injuries, fatalities, significant dollar loss, and those which are intentionally set.

The prosecution of arsonists is coordinated with the assistance of the Criminal Investigation Division of the Winston-Salem Police Department. The release of information concerning intentionally set fires is handled by the Winston-Salem Police Department.

Fire and Life Safety Investigators also coordinate the Youth Firesetter Prevention and Intervention Program with assistance from the Winston-Salem Police Department.
