A Traditional Pension PLUS Social Security

City employees earn that rarest of all benefits these days: A traditional pension that sends them a check no matter how long they live.

• Retirees have four pension payment options, including one that keeps their retirement check coming to a surviving spouse after they pass away.

• Retirement checks are periodically adjusted for inflation.

• Employees are eligible for full retirement at any age after 30 years of service with the city – many retirees get a second job and bank their pension check.

• Retirement payments are in addition to Social Security, giving our retirees a second check every month.

An Additional Lump-Sum Payment at Retirement

• All city employees (except police officers, who have a separate retirement plan) are enrolled in the city’s 401A plan.

• The plan provides a lump sum upon your retirement equal to 2 percent of what you earned every year you worked for the city.

• The benefit is fully paid for by the city. Employees do not have to contribute a thing!
