Bike Route Maps

In 2007 the City of Winston-Salem contracted with Toole Design Group to review and update the original bike route plan from the late 1980s. These routes were designed to follow streets/roads with less traffic and a more friendly terrain for cycling. Currently, Routes 4 and 5 are signed.

Great Bike Rides In & Around Winston-Salem (CD-ROM)

Inspired by the interest in Bike South 2000, Judi Wallace and Ken Putnam compiled a guide that offers 59 bike routes in the Winston-Salem area. All routes start in Winston-Salem and loop into the surrounding counties of:

  • Davidson
  • Davie
  • Forsyth
  • Iredell
  • Stokes
  • Surry
  • Yadkin

They range in length from 15 miles to 75 miles, offering choices for all cycling abilities. Although most of the rides are designed for road biking, off-road trails for mountain bikers are included. There is also a section for family rides.

Route Details Included in Guide

Each route includes:

  • A detailed map of the route
  • A mile-by-mile description, with turns and landmarks indicated
  • A narrative description of what the cyclist will see along the route
  • Photos of sites along the route
  • A summary of route information, including:
    • Distance
    • Location of food sources and restrooms
    • Noteworthy hazards
    • Traffic conditions
    • Type of terrain
