Each K-9 team completes a 400-hour block of K-9 instruction prior to being released. Once released, each K-9 team is required to maintain 16 hours of monthly in service K-9 training.

Certification

All K-9s on staff completes K-9 Certification through the North American Police Working Dog Association every year. Each K-9 team is certified to detect the odor of five controlled substances: marijuana, ecstasy, cocaine (crack and powder), heroin and methamphetamine. Also, each team completes certification in patrol aspects such as tracking, article searches, building searches and handler protection.
