Northeast Suburban Area Plan Update

Adopted 2017

The Northeast Suburban Area Plan Update (PDF) was recommended for approval by the Planning Board on June 8, 2017, and was adopted by the Winston-Salem City Council on September 5, 2017 for the portion of the planning area within its municipal boundaries. The Forsyth County Board of Commissioners adopted the plan on December 14, 2017 for portions of the planning area within unincorporated Forsyth County. The plan update will guide future land use and provides recommendations for public/private investment decisions, including:

  • Community facilities
  • Economic development
  • Historic preservation
  • Housing and community development
  • Transportation

  1. Planning Area

Planning Area Boundary

The Northeast Suburban Planning Area (PDF) is approximately 9,700 acres and is bounded:

  • On the east by the Winston-Salem boundary line
  • On the north by Old Hollow Road (NC 66)
  • On the south by Business 40/US-421
  • On the west by Germanton Road

The planning area includes a large portion of the Northeast ward and a small part of the East ward, as well as some unincorporated land in Forsyth County.
