Traffic Enforcement Unit

Traffic Enforcement Unit Group PhotoThe Traffic Enforcement Unit is made up of marked Police motorcycles and non-traditional unmarked vehicles. This unit is responsible for the enforcement of traffic laws and ordinances. Specific duties include the investigation of accidents, traffic fatality investigations, operation of surveillance equipment, monitoring high accident locations to reduce unlawful driving behavior, and assignment to special events in the city.

While the Traffic Enforcement Unit work a regular schedule, they are also deployed on a call out status to investigate serious, fatal or potentially fatal crashes.

Statistics

During 2018, the Traffic Enforcement Unit handled 29 fatal crashes. This was in addition to the 6,501 calls for service they routinely handled.

Campaigns

This unit is also involved in all campaigns sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Transportation Governor's Highway Safety Program which includes Click It or Ticket, Booze It and Loose It, and Obey the Sign or Pay the Fine.
