[ARCHIVED] Recreation Centers Open During Heat Wave

Most city recreation centers will be available this week as an option for city residents who need a place to cool down during the heat wave forecasted for the next few days. Exceptions are Belview Neighborhood Center, which is closed for renovations, and Rupert Bell Neighborhood Center, which has an inoperable air-conditioning system awaiting repairs.

Hours vary from center to center and are posted at WePLAY.ws.

Another option is to contact a nearby neighbor, relative or friend who has air-conditioning.

The National Weather Service recommends staying out of the sun and eliminating strenuous activities, including running, biking and lawn mowing during extreme heat. Other tips include:

  • Drinking plenty of water, juice and other non-alcoholic, non-carbonated, caffeine-free beverages
  • Wearing loose-fitting clothing that is light in color.
  • Checking on elderly friends, neighbors and relatives to ensure they are coping with the heat.

Additional heat safety tips and resources are available at Weather.gov/safety/heat.
