Liberty Street Urban Farmers Market Hosting Rec & Roll

The Liberty Street Urban Farmers Market will host Rec & Roll, a pop-up recreation program, during this week’s market from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19. There also will be a DJ playing music and the Smoke City Cooking food truck, says Moriah Gendy, the market manager.

“We’re putting together a fun event that we hope will draw some new visitors to the market,” Gendy said. “We want to make more people aware of the famers market as an outlet for fresh food grown by local urban farmers, and spread the word that we will be here every Friday through September.”

To further encourage visitors, the first 50 customers of the food truck will get their meal for free, Gendy said.

Rec & Roll is a program that Recreation & Parks started this summer to bring structured recreation activities to parks that normally have none. A version of the program, modified for the Liberty Street Market site, will offer air-powered rockets, Frisbees, jump ropes, arts & crafts and other activities suitable for ages 2 through 15.

The market is open Fridays through September at 1551 Liberty St. as a venue for urban farmers and other local vendors. Every week, SNAP EBT users can get a coupon matching their SNAP purchases up to $5. More information about the market, including an application for new vendors, is posted at CityofWS.org/LSM.
