[ARCHIVED] City Council Holding Special Meeting To Review Transformative Grant Applications

The City Council will hold a special meeting at 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 29, to review applications for grants to fund “transformative” programs that would address such social and economic needs as poverty alleviation, job training and economic mobility.

Eighty-nine non-profit organizations have submitted applications for grants that total $51 million. Using a scoring system the council approved in February, the city staff has organized the applications into three tiers.

Money for the grants would come out of the $51.7 million in federal money the city is receiving through the Coronavirus Local Fiscal Recovery Fund approved by Congress last year. The City Council has already spent or reserved more than $32 million of this for other purposes, including affordable housing.

At their meeting Monday, council members will review how much money they want to allocate for transformative grants. The council is not expected to approve any grants until its meeting in September, at the earliest.

Earlier this year, the city provided recovery grants to 26 small businesses and non-profits that were behind on their rent, mortgage or utilities payments because of the pandemic. Those grants totaled about $444,000.

More details about the transformative grants program, including a list of the grant applications the city has received, are posted at CityofWS.org/TransformativeGrants.
