[ARCHIVED] Bowman Gray Track To Be Resurfaced

The top layer of the racing track at Bowman Gray Stadium will be milled and a new surface laid down the week of Sept. 19 to address wear and tear on the track during this summer’s racing season.

The work will be performed under warranty with the contractors that performed the work last December, at no additional cost to the city. The resurfacing was the final phase of the city’s $9 million package of improvements to the historic stadium.

Samples of the track taken by an engineering consulting firm revealed that compaction of the asphalt in seven small areas (about 1 percent of the track) did not meet specifications, resulting in premature deterioration of the surface in these areas. Instead of patching these areas, the construction team agreed that it would be best to mill and repave the entire track.

The city has retained a third-party engineering firm to monitor the installation of the new surface to ensure the asphalt meets standards for temperature, density, mix design and flatness.

Resurfacing the track next week ensures that the surface will be repaired in time for Winston-Salem State University’s homecoming football game on Oct. 1.
